Tell me about yourself!
I’m from Vancouver BC, but as a dual citizen of Canada and the US, I’ve been able to live and work all over the continent, including stints in New York, Portland, LA and Orlando. But my heart’s home is always Canada where I spent the majority of the past 15 years based out of Dawson City Yukon, heart of the 1890’s Arctic Gold Rush and ‘land of the midnight sun”. The Yukon breeds hearty souls, rugged and clever and resourceful, and the wild landscape is stunning and pristine. I actually spent 3 years living alone in a cabin in the woods without electricity or running water – at minus forty celsius in winters! I have recently relocated to Montreal and am enjoying the extreme contrast which includes fresh fruit and paved roads.
What was your most memorable vacation?
Because of my years of seasonal work with Princess cruises, I was able to take a lot of long trips in the off season, so it’s hard to pick! But probably the winter when I spent two months in an attic apartment in Lisbon, Portugal followed by a month in a cave house in the Sassi di Matera in Italy. Lisbon is a city dripping with ancient delights, faded glamour and a night life that just doesn’t quit, and I’ve spent a fair bit of time there over the years. Matera’s Sassi district is a UNESCO world heritage site of cave houses carved into the hill itself; it looks like something out of a fantasy novel. I spent an exquisitely lonesome Christmas there, often sitting on the ancient limestone wall outside my apartment listening to the choir song drifting across the light-studded hillside, and eating like a king.
What do you like to do outside of work or travel?
I’m an omnivorous reader with a bent towards lush histories and captivating narratives, I’m also handy and crafty so I make jewelry, do needlework and love home renovations and gardening. When I rolled my first potatoes out of the dirt I felt the hand of my Shropshire-farm-raised Grandfather clap me on the back in satisfaction.
Do you have a favorite place to visit?
Gotta be Lisbon. I ended up there for the first time in 2006 on a whim and fell head over heels for the city in a matter of days. It’s changed a lot, but back then the downtown core was full of twinkle-eyed plum-shaped grandmas stringing laundry between their windows and hollering at their neighbors kids, overgrown moorish fountains and rickety yellow street cars. It got ‘discovered’ since then and the prices and crowds have risen to match, but I would still take a glass of ginjinha at a table by the Tagus in a heartbeat if I could.
