The Land of England
London
London runs on its own rules entirely, glass towers rising around the dome of St Paul’s in the City before giving way, a few streets on, to lanes that have barely changed since Dickens. The theatre here runs deeper than almost anywhere else in the world, and an afternoon at the British Museum or the Tate Modern costs nothing but time. The city rewards a driver who knows which streets to avoid at which hour, since traffic can undo a well-planned afternoon faster than almost anything else here.
Southern England
South of London, the roads narrow and the pace drops, the stone turning the color of honey, hedgerows close enough to touch from the car window. Oxford’s spires rise out of the same soft farmland around them, and certain towns catch a slant of afternoon light no photograph quite gets right. Further southwest the land turns wilder and the air changes with it, salt and gorse, the coastline dropping straight into a sea that somehow runs warmer than anywhere else in the country.
Northern England
The north feels like a different country the moment you arrive. The accents take a day or two to place, and something in the way people talk to strangers here is warmer and more direct than the south. Mountains and lakes give way to stone walls and sheep, the same landscape that once gave Wordsworth his subject, and elsewhere, medieval streets remain barely changed after five hundred years, narrow and cobbled and still doing the trade they were built for.

Many of the great houses here are still privately held, family seats rather than museums, and getting inside one properly takes more than a ticket. Swinton Park in Yorkshire and Thornbury Castle on the edge of Bristol are two we return to, either for a stay or, with enough notice, for the whole property.
Golf brings a certain kind of guest across the border in both directions. Royal St George’s in Kent, host to fifteen Open Championships, and Royal Birdale, sit at opposite ends of the same tradition, and we arrange tee times at both, the transfer between them handled by road or by air when the distance calls for it.
Theatre runs deeper here than almost anywhere else in the world, the West End and the Royal Shakespeare Company both staging productions that never travel, and Stratford-upon-Avon still feels like Shakespeare’s actual town rather than a recreation of one.
