Tell me about yourself!
I grew up in Shannon, Co. Clare, spending an awful lot of time around Dromoland, Bunratty, the Burren and yes, Durty Nelly’s. At school, my career guidance teacher persuaded me that my future was in hotel management so I followed that path, eventually earning my degree. My entire career was spent in hospitality in 3, 4, and 5-star hotels at senior levels in Ireland, England, and Canada. I have also owned my own business, and I accepted a project to open 2 Irish bars simultaneously in Bucharest and Lanzarote, both named the “Brian Boru”. Now, I livejust outside Calgary, Canada, and I’m so envious of guests that I’m helping to plan a holiday to Ireland in my new career with Sheenco Travel.
What do you like to do outside of work
Calgary summers are fantastic, and it’s a very vibrant city with loads of things to do all year- round, so that alone would keep you busy. I like sports – I used to play soccer, rugby, and took karate. Now, I like to cycle around our local lake, drive to Banff in the nearby Rockies and Kelowna in the interior British Columbia, and I play golf as often as I can. Being from County Clare, I have played golf at Lahinch, and the Trump International Hotel in Doonbeg. I’m a BBQ person – I’m lucky to be living very close to my eldest son and his family so we BBQ often. My youngest son and his family live very close to Adare in Limerick, so whenever I get back to Ireland, we always like to get in a round of golf there too.
Do you like to travel?
I worked for a hotel company in Ireland which required that I travel all around the country, and that was amazing because it allowed me to see most of it. I’ve also been lucky enough to have travelled to 31 other countries, including England, Scotland, and Wales. I’ve been to Thailand 9 times. I used to rave about that country so much that my brother visited it 20 years ago just to prove me wrong about the place – and he’s still there! My middle son also moved there 5 years ago, so I have every excuse in the world to keep going back there.
What are some memorable places you have traveled to?
Growing up in and around Irish castles, the culture, and the magnificent history was something I took for granted. But now I’m not there, Ireland is definitely the most memorable place I’ve been to. After that, there are loads of contenders, but I would have to say Thailand, Spain, and Egypt are next. Berlin is up there too, because of its history. There are just so many amazing places to visit these days.
